Museum of Art-DeLand Exhibition: Yolanda Sánchez, The Colour of Spring

Cuban American artist Yolanda Sánchez brings her nature-inspired vision to this springtime exhibition at the Museum of Art – DeLand. Her colorful, flowing textiles created in the traditional Korean Bojagi style are displayed alongside her vibrant, floral inspired paintings.

Nature, in a very broad sense, is Sánchez’s source of inspiration. In a non-intellectual way, she translates and projects thoughts, emotions and sensations into a moment of meeting – working with light, color and mark and the materiality of the paint itself. She holds a space for the viewer – to enter, to be there, to have a moment of contemplation, and to finish the work, as it were. Subject and object are dissolved and replaced by a presence – a “presence without form.” There is no story to be told, just simply a desire to awaken.

The Zmed Brothers say, “ The music of the 50’s and 60’s is nostalgic for us, our parents raised us all on it, and we feel that Don and Phil’s contribution is greatly overlooked, especially by younger generations. Our aim is not to impersonate but to do our best at honoring their brotherly legacy through our own spirits by representing the aesthetics of their iconic sound and by exploring the important role they played in pioneering the rock n’ roll movement, all while having a little fun sharing our own personal story,” and they do just that.

The Athens Theatre Company Presents: Rent

Since its 1996 debut, Jonathan Larson’s musical, Rent, has been awarded four Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize! For almost 30 years, it has been enthralling audiences with its story of love, loss, and hope set against the backdrop of New York’s Lower East Side during the onslaught of the HIV/AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s. Loosely based on Puccini’s La Bohème, the show follows a group of impoverished artists and musicians as they navigate their way through a year of challenges and triumphs, all while trying to make a life for themselves in the city that never sleeps. Over its almost four-decade-long run, Rent has been praised for its frank and honest portrayal of addiction, mental illness, and disease, as well as its hopeful message of love and acceptance. The musical has resonated with audiences all over the world, and although it is now widely recognized as a theatre classic, its popularity continues to grow. Rent reminds us all that the only way we should be measuring the seasons of our life is in “Seasons of Love!”
